CHAPTER 11
It turned out that Avery lied about the degree to which installing a new toilet would be disgusting, or at the very least, she had a very different idea from Hannah about what counted as gross. In Hannah’s book, draining the water out of a fifty-year old toilet with decades of hard water stains and sediment in the tank was well-qualified to be considered disgusting. It wasn’t a particularly floral smell and the small bathroom only increased her discomfort.
Before they began, she’d even foolishly thought that this DIY project might lead to another steamy moment, like the water leak in the basement. She did not, however, find crouching shoulder to shoulder above the waste stack nearly so erotic as a washing machine malfunction. Hannah just wanted to get the job done as fast as possible and then do whatever it took to make sure she never had to install another toilet with her own hands for the rest of her life. She wasn’t sure she’d ever stop washing her hands after this, for that matter.
“You’re being a baby,” Avery said with a laugh at the wrinkled expression on Hannah’s face as they lifted the old toilet into a garbage bag and water dripped along the floor in the process. “It’s not like this is sewage water. It just came from the well.”
“It’s gross,” Hannah said. Maybe a woman who worked in construction all day could handle this, but Hannah identified much more with Rebecca’s term of endearment for her – lap dog – and she wasn’t so sure that she was cut out for all of the renovations Avery wanted to do.
“Well then, you’re not going to like the next step,” Avery said with a wicked grin.
“Oh no,” Hannah said, “What is it?”
“Pull that wax ring out of the waste stack,” Avery said. “We have to replace it, too.”
“With my hand?” Hannah asked, blanching as she looked at the grimy, sticky-looking mess wrapped around the hole in the floor. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Don’t you remember our deal?” Avery asked. “You do the work with my supervision and I don’t charge you exorbitant contractor rates.”
“Can you just run the rates by me?” Hannah asked, feeling a little queasy. “It might be worth it for this one.”
“Grow a pair, buttercup,” Avery teased with a grin. “You’re going to learn how to install a toilet whether you like it or not. But to show you that I’m not completely sadistic, I do have a pair of gloves for you.”
She slapped a pair of rubber gloves into Hannah’s palm, along with a plastic scraper, then gestured again to the wax ring on the floor. Hannah swallowed hard and pulled the gloves on, reminding herself not to breathe as her face got closer to the waste stack. She threw a sour look Avery’s way and then crouched down on the floor. She followed Avery’s instructions, scraping the old wax into the trash bag, and when she stood up again, Avery was smiling at her with a satisfied look on her face.
